Chapter Thirteen

As Maribel’s truck traveled down the dusty dirt road, Blair’s heart sank. The dilapidated trailers dotting the landscape became increasingly run down before Maribel stopped her truck and took a deep breath, then exited the vehicle.

A small dark-haired girl rushed from a trailer that Blair thought might have been held together with duct tape. The door banged against the side, startling Blair. The girl couldn’t have been more than eight. She was wearing ragged clothes, frayed at the edges, with tiny holes in the material. Her feet were bare, but that didn’t stop her short legs from propelling her in Maribel’s direction. She flung her little body against Maribel who put her arms around the young child and hugged her.

“Mari,” she squealed. “You’re here. Ma said you probably weren’t coming today ’cause it was getting late in the day.”

“Got held up. Sorry, Squirt. You been practicing with the tin cans?”

“Yes’m. Ma don’t like the noise, but I told her I gotta get good like you and then I can win us some money.”

“That’s right, Squirt. Now let me get the stuff from the truck to give your mama. I can’t stay long. I got a friend with me today. You wanna meet her?”

Soft brown eyes looked up, and the girl turned shy when she nodded.

“Blair, meet Squirt.”

The girl giggled. “That’s not my name.”

“It isn’t? Well, dang. I guess I forgot again.”

“It’s Lucritia.”

“Oh, right, right.”

Blair held out her hand. “It’s very nice to meet you, Lucritia.”

Lucritia looked back toward the trailer as a young woman who, Blair guessed, was in her twenties walked toward the truck. She had the same shiny dark hair as Lucritia. “Go ahead, you can shake her hand.”

“Sorry I’m late. You have breakfast yet?”

The woman smiled. “Yes, Mother. We still had eggs left.”

“Did you run out of bacon or ham?”

“No. I was saving that for dinner.”

“I made too much food again for Blair and me, so I brought chicken for you. Cook up the meat tomorrow for breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day.”

“Yeah, yeah.” The woman gestured with her head at Blair. “Did ya get yourself a girlfriend?”

“Hi, I’m Blair.”

“I heard. Danella.” The woman took her offered hand. “Mari’s an angel. I hope you plan on treating her right.”

Blair coughed. “Uh, we met a few days ago.”

“Don’t care how long ago you met. Still need to treat her right.”

“I couldn’t agree more. I’m working on it.”

Danella squinted at Blair. “All right. You two want to sit a spell? I put water in the fridge to cool.”

“Nah, thanks, Danella. I have a few more deliveries to make and then we’ve got work to do later. Did you find someone to watch Squirt so you can take that job?”

“Nah.”

“My offer is still good. I could watch her.”

“You can’t do all your practicing if you got a kid hanging round. Nope, gotta win those gold medals again. Make us proud. I’ll figure something out. It’s minimum wage and part-time. Not sure that’ll help us any more than what we get from the state right now.
